American University Teach-In Brings Union Adjuncts, Students Together

American University Teach In

Twenty-five American University students gathered in the university’s Kay Spiritual Life Center to meet some of the adjuncts who teach a growing percentage of classes, both at the institution and at colleges and universities across the country.

The students came to hear about how contingent academic labor affects the entire mission of higher education – from instruction to academic freedom.

When American University adjuncts overwhelmingly voted to unionize over a year ago, their efforts benefited by an engaged student body that, among other things, called on the university not to use their tuition dollars to oppose the adjunct faculty union.

Now, the adjunct faculty representing their colleagues on the bargaining team are inching towards a first contract with the university – one that will respect the work of adjunct faculty and recognize their critical and growing role in instruction and the life of the university.
