President’s Corner – From the November 2015 Newsletter

Traditionally, this is one of the times of the year when we gather with family, friends and neighbors and think about all the things for which we are thankful.
However, I have been extremely disappointed lately in the anti-education and anti-worker direction of the rhetoric and policies that is coming from politicians and governments – from the halls of Congress to state Capitols in Virginia and Maryland and all the way down to county offices in Rockville and beyond.
But then I stopped and took some time to think about the reasons we have to be thankful.
Unlike tens of millions of other people across the country, when big business and politicians come after us with pitchforks and torches, we have the ability to stop them.
But we can’t just hold our ground while the earth crumbles beneath our feet. We can win these fights. We can make our workplaces, our communities and our nation fairer and more just places to work and raise a family.
What we can’t do, is achieve these things alone.
I am thankful because we don’t have to do it alone. We are a union and that means we have each other – and there are more of us than ever! Hundreds of your colleagues and co-workers have joined you in recent months to make SEIU Local 500 one of the largest, fastest growing worker advocacy organizations in our region.
Some just became eligible to become members, after winning their first contract. Others have been working beside you for years and only recently made the choice to join you as members. Many of them only signed up because someone they work with – someone like you – took just a few minutes to talk to them about our union and signed them up.
In the end, we can all be thankful for the greatest weapon we have in the struggle to protect and grow the middle class: solidarity.
Thank you for all that you do.
Merle Cuttitta
President, SEIU Local 500
