Working People Win with Overtime Rule

Recently, the Obama administration expanded the number of working people eligible for overtime.

The final rule, which takes effect on December 1, 2016, doubles the salary threshold—from $23,660 to $47,476 per year—under which most salaried workers are guaranteed overtime (hourly workers are generally guaranteed overtime pay regardless of their earnings level).  Additionally, this new level will be automatically updated every three years to ensure that workers continue to earn the pay they deserve.

The Obama administration’s decision to increase the overtime threshold is incredibly important. Millions of Americans who are working hard to reach the middle class – or else struggling to remain there – will benefit. Whether by being fairly paid for additional work or by being able to spend more time with family, this rule makes it easier for people to stand up for their rights.

As an employee of Oxfam America and a member of SEIU Local 500, I believe that nonprofit, cause-oriented organizations have a responsibility to live up to their own ideals. This change was a long time coming and every progressive organization should be thrilled to see it finally happen!
