On April 26 the Montgomery County Council voted not/not to approve funding for the county’s various employee union contracts, including that between Montgomery College and the SEIU Local 500 Part-Time Faculty Union. Pay increases for part-time faculty in 2016-17, the third year of our 2014-17 employment contract, are conditioned on the county council providing adequate funding to meet the college’s financial obligation. The council’s action, then, left the college with no alternative but to reopen our contract and seek an adjustment to scheduled pay increases for the next academic year.
After discussion with our Part-Time Faculty Union Executive Committee, SEIU tentatively agreed with the college (subject to ratification by union members) to a one-percent (1%) modification of previously negotiated increases for the 2016-17 academic year. Under the modified contract, part-time faculty would receive the following pay raises based on rank: Lecturer – 4 percent; Adjunct I – 5 percent; and Adjunct II – 6 percent. The original contracted increases were 5 percent, 6 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
Note that the part-time faculty employment contract negotiated by SEIU covers all part-time instructors, whether or not they are union members.
Even with this modest adjustment, however, our negotiated salary improvements in percentage terms remain among the highest of all county employee groups.
At a meeting last week, our Executive Committee discussed the county’s decision at length and endorsed the proposed modification.
We will confirm acceptance of this proposed modification when it is finally approved. In the meantime if you have any questions, feel free to contact me or one of your union representatives on the three campuses.
