Volunteer for Election Day Activities!

The general election is finally here and is sure to be one of the most consequential elections in a long time.

As you know, SEIU Local 500 took the unprecedented step of not endorsing any candidates for the Montgomery Board of Education during this election cycle.  The Local 500 Executive Board, COPE Committee and leaders of the union decided to take this time to recalibrate our political program at the county level. That’s why we will not handing out our “Bus Ballot” at the polls in Montgomery County on November 8th.

However, make no mistake, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t important Election Day work to do!

SEIU has endorsed champions of labor and working families like Chris Van Hollen for the U.S. Senate in Maryland and Hillary Clinton for President, among others.  These candidates share our values and support several issues that members of our union care about, like: affordable child care, reducing the burden of student debt and commonsense immigration reform.

Virginia will be an important swing state this year, so please let me know if you would like to help on Election Day by phone banking or canvassing in Northern Virginia.

There will be also three locations for phone banking throughout Montgomery County.

Phone banking shifts in Montgomery County will start at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Tuesday, Nov 8: Sign up to make calls from Silver SpringBethesda, or Gaithersburg.

These phone banks are not being organized by SEIU so please let us know if you sign up for one!

Canvassing will be taking place from 9 AM – 6:30 PM in northern Virginia.  If you are interested in joining a canvass please contact Beth Myers at myersb@seiu500.org.

There will be more to do after the election to begin the process of holding elected officials accountable.  Be on the lookout for more information from the COPE Committee and how you can get involved.

Thank you for all that you do.

Merle Cuttitta
President, SEIU Local 500
