Montgomery College Part-time Faculty Statement of Principles
The work of community colleges like Montgomery College is critical to the success of our communities and our state, particularly in the current economic climate. Maryland’s community colleges generate roughly $11.6 billion in economic activity annually. The average student’s lifetime income will increase by $5 for every $1 invested in his or her education at Montgomery College.
As part-time faculty members at Montgomery College, we teach forty percent of the courses and are central to the success of the College and its role in the community. We are dedicated professionals who show our commitment to our students and the College everyday, teaching and mentoring both inside and outside the classroom.
We call on Montgomery College to respect our professional status and decision to form a union with SEIU Local 500 and to show commitment to us by agreeing to the following principles as a framework for on-going productive contract negotiations:
- Compensation that equitably reflects the value of our teaching in the classroom and our expertise outside it
- Job security
- Access to health, retirement and other benefits enjoyed by all other employees of Montgomery College
- Respect and recognition for our professionalism and dedication
- Regular, fair and constructive teaching evaluations
- Working conditions that allow us to be the best possible teachers for our students
- Transparency in governance and a role for part-time faculty in academic decision-making
- Due process protection, including for discipline and dismissal, for all part-time faculty
